Meet a Celebrity Designer

Q.What exactly is your style of work - that is your signature style in Interior Designing that stands you apart from others? M.K.: I am in this field for the last twenty years and if I have been able to establish myself and have earned a specific recognition and status over the years; it is the element of ‘Aptitude’ for my job. In fact I have had no formal education in Interior Designing. I did my degree in Engineering and, PG from the School of Architecture and Planning, Delhi. I had some inherent interest in Designing even as a teenager and owing to this I am very comfortable with my job. Every design is fine with me; be it contemporary, fusion, classical or minimalism in terms of theme. At Abhikalpan, we do not impose our taste and our ideas on the clients and thus our projects are different. That is to say I involve myself with the projects more as an artist than as a professional and you might say that is my style.
Q. Do you adopt a set methodology to start work on a new project? M.K.: At times the client’s ideas are not very clear about his own requirements. He may not be mature enough to understand the quality and merits of design. I then educate him and elevate his understanding of the design to a level where he can appreciate it in totality. May be I could plan-out a design and he accepts it too, but as a creative artist, as a designer I should take care not to impose my ideas and my philosophy on him. I only help him translate his own ideas into reality. We help him define his actual requirements which he himself could not do for want of professional knowledge. This done, we analyse the details and suggest a design. Nine times out of ten we find the client is simply thrilled that we could gauge his requirements so exactly.
